KEF LS LUXE: The Art of Making a Loudspeaker Disappear - Nigel Ng on Design, Engineering and the Sound of Emotion.

There was a time when buying a serious loudspeaker came with an implicit obligation to rearrange the room around it. The cabinets were large, the cables were plentiful and the visual message was generally unmistakable: Music mattered here, possibly more than the furniture.


That has changed.


The modern loudspeaker increasingly has to negotiate a more complicated domestic life. It may be asked to soundtrack dinner, sit quietly beside a television, survive a workday, accommodate a record collection and still perform when somebody finally sits down and listens properly. In other words, it has to be good at music without behaving like a piece of equipment that has been granted diplomatic immunity from interior design.


KEF's LS LUXE is an intriguing response to that problem.


Designed by Ross Lovegrove, whose earlier MUON for KEF pushed loudspeaker design into distinctly sculptural territory, LS LUXE has the peculiar appearance of something discovered rather than assembled. Its rounded, almost biological form avoids the visual grammar we have come to associate with conventional speakers, yet there is very little frivolity beneath it.


The shape, materials and enclosure have been developed alongside the acoustic engineering, rather than applied afterwards as an attractive disguise.


That matters because KEF has never really been interested in making technology merely decorative.


Since its beginnings in 1961, including its formative work with the BBC monitor tradition, the company has pursued the rather unforgiving business of reproducing music faithfully. Its more recent history, however, has also been about questioning the assumptions surrounding that pursuit. The LS50, MUON and LS60 each moved the loudspeaker further away from the idea that serious audio had to announce itself through size, complexity or an intimidating collection of boxes.


LS LUXE takes that argument somewhere more domestic.


Its 12th-generation Uni-Q driver, Metamaterial Absorption Technology and Velocity Control Technology belong firmly to the world of engineering. The wireless architecture belongs to the present-day realities of how people actually listen. Lovegrove's enclosure belongs somewhere between industrial design, sculpture and furniture.


The interesting part is that none of those things seems to be competing for attention.


There is an old idea in design that the best object is the one that becomes almost invisible in use. It is a notion that runs from Heidegger's writing on tools to Dieter Rams' insistence that good design should be as little design as possible. In audio, however, invisibility has a slightly different meaning. A speaker can be visually arresting while its purpose is to disappear acoustically.


That is the trick.


You should notice the object before the music begins. Once the music does begin, ideally, you stop noticing the object altogether.

Nigel Ng has spent much of his career thinking about precisely this relationship between technology and the people expected to live with it. As Director of Advance Audio Australia and Audio Connection, and one of the figures behind the growth of KEF and other premium audio brands in Australia, he brings an unusually broad view of the category.


His background spans engineering, business, distribution, product management, operations and marketing, but his interest ultimately seems to land somewhere less measurable: What happens to a person when a system gets the music right.


His answer is refreshingly unscientific.


He likes making people cry. Not through defective electronics, one assumes.


It is difficult to imagine a more useful antidote to the tendency of high-end audio to disappear into specifications, acronyms and arguments about cables.


Because LS LUXE is ultimately less interesting as an inventory of technology than as evidence of where premium audio is heading. The speaker is no longer necessarily something to hide, tolerate or build a room around. It can be part of the room's character while remaining uncompromising about what happens when the needle drops, the stream begins or the first note arrives.


Which raises a more interesting question than whether LS LUXE sounds good.


What happens when a loudspeaker becomes sufficiently resolved that the machinery behind the music starts to matter less than the reason we bought it in the first place?


We asked Nigel Ng.


The LS LUXE looks almost biological - more grown than manufactured. What did Ross Lovegrove see in a loudspeaker that engineers alone might not have seen?


Nigel Ng: Ross brought a very different lens to the project. Engineers naturally begin with acoustics, materials, manufacturability and performance targets, which, of course, are all essential. Ross looks at a loudspeaker as something that must earn its place in a home and create an emotional response before the music even starts.


One of the elements I've been happiest to see over my career in this industry is that audio manufacturers have recognised people don't only have to listen to their products - they have to look at them too.


You can see that philosophy in his earlier KEF MUON design. MUON was an uncompromising exercise in allowing acoustic engineering and industrial design to evolve together: A two-metre, super-formed aluminium loudspeaker with no sharp edges, where the sculptural form also delivered exceptional stiffness and helped serve the acoustic objectives.


Ross himself described the intention as marrying a sensual yet logical organic form with state-of-the-art audio technology.


With LS LUXE, he has taken that same conviction in a more intimate and liveable direction. A speaker doesn't have to be a rectangular box simply because loudspeakers have traditionally been rectangular boxes.


The organic form is not styling added at the end; it is part of the product's identity and part of the way its engineering is expressed. From an acoustic perspective, sharp edges can cause edge diffraction, so the organic shape Ross Lovegrove developed is not only beautiful to behold, but acoustically relevant.


That is what Ross sees that engineers alone may not: The opportunity to make advanced technology feel more human. LS LUXE remains a serious loudspeaker, but it is also tactile, sculptural and emotionally engaging - something you choose to live with rather than simply accommodate.


Its sculptural form is not merely cosmetic; the enclosure, materials and geometry contribute to the acoustic performance. Where does industrial design end and engineering begin - or, with LS LUXE, has that distinction become rather meaningless?


Nigel Ng: For manufacturers at the forefront, I think that distinction is largely meaningless.


There was a noticeable change in KEF's design direction some decades ago, when its speakers evolved from the traditional wooden cabinets so ubiquitous with hi-fi into more elegant and modern designs that suit contemporary interiors.


Victor Lo, KEF's Chairman, is himself an industrial designer, so this aspect of speaker design is very important to him.


With LS LUXE specifically, this is where collaboration between engineer and designer becomes interesting. Engineering defined the acoustic requirements - control of resonance, volume, driver behaviour, heat management and dispersion - while Ross worked with those requirements without defaulting to the conventional loudspeaker box.


The result is a form that feels inevitable rather than styled. Every curve has an aesthetic consequence, but it also has an acoustic or functional reason for being there.


KEF has spent decades pursuing greater fidelity, yet much of LS LUXE's technology is devoted to eliminating what shouldn't be heard. Is the future of high-end audio ultimately less about adding capability and more about removing interference between listener and music?


Nigel Ng: Regarding the future of high-end audio, yes, it is about removing interference between the listener and the music, but that's not necessarily the true goal.


Whenever I'm configuring a system for a customer, my goal is to connect the emotional element of music to the listener. Music is an art form created by humans for other humans, and it's used to convey emotion and tell stories. The better the hi-fi system, the more that emotion is conveyed.


I'll say something that might sound a little bit sick, but one of my greatest goals in life is watching grown adults cry when I sit them in front of a hi-fi system, as it means I've done my job.


There is absolutely a technical element to this. Physical placement, cabling, amplification and the audio source all play a significant part, and it's our job as specialists on the ground to ensure that all the effort KEF invests in R&D and innovation is actually conveyed to the listener.


The objective isn't to make the speaker sound more "impressive" in a hi-fi sense. It's to remove the things that make you conscious of the speaker - blur, hardness, congestion or bass that becomes less controlled as the level rises.


When that interference is reduced, you hear more of the recording's timing, space, texture and emotion.


Velocity Control Technology gives the speaker feedback about its own physical behaviour. Does that represent a philosophical shift for KEF - from building speakers that faithfully reproduce a signal to systems that continually correct themselves?


Nigel Ng: One of the advantages KEF has over many competitors is its control over the signal chain in its LS active speaker range.


When manufacturers make a passive speaker, they don't know what amplifier or cable will ultimately be connected to it. They therefore have to make compromises that allow the speaker to work with a range of third-party products.


With the LS range, KEF controls the entire audio chain, meaning it can extract more performance from each component within the speaker.


I often draw an analogy to cars. A passive hi-fi system is a little like building a fast road car from outstanding components. You might choose a brilliant engine, suspension, brakes, tyres and ECU from different suppliers. It can be a fantastic result, but every part has been designed to work across a broad range of possible installations rather than around your exact car.


A race car is developed differently. The power unit, chassis, aerodynamics, suspension, brakes, tyres and control software are engineered as one system.


Technologies such as VECO come from this approach. KEF still won't know what room the speaker is going into, but it does know how far the drivers are moving. If the speakers are placed in a large room and require more volume, VECO allows LS LUXE to be pushed towards its limits without damage, giving the listener the maximum enjoyment.


LS LUXE takes the convenience historically associated with wireless audio and places it firmly in high-end territory. Has the old opposition between convenience and serious hi-fi finally become obsolete?


Nigel Ng: We've been trending this way as an industry for a while, and LS LUXE certainly exemplifies it.


The market is clear: While passive speaker unit sales declined 15 per cent in 2024 and are forecast to continue declining through to 2029, the total market is growing in value, particularly in wireless hi-fi and luxury hi-fi systems.


That's not surprising. Sonos, arguably the largest wireless audio company, has been doing this for more than 20 years. Customers who outgrow Sonos because they want something that sounds better, can progress to a system such as KEF while retaining the convenience and usability they've become accustomed to.


I wouldn't go so far as to say serious hi-fi is obsolete. There is still a place for dedicated systems, and in fact it's one of the growing sectors of our business.


At our retail store, Audio Connection in Sydney, we've sold more six-figure speakers between 2024 and 2026 than in the previous 20 years combined.

Higher-end systems are better able to convey the true emotion behind music.


At A$6,375 a pair, LS LUXE sits intriguingly between high-end audio and collectible design. When does a technological object become a luxury object, and what does luxury mean to KEF beyond simply making something more expensive?


Nigel Ng: For KEF, a technological object becomes a luxury object when the technology is no longer just a specification - it is resolved.


It has to perform at a very high level, certainly, but it also has to feel considered in the way it looks, feels, operates and lives in someone's space.


Luxury isn't simply a more expensive material, more power or a more elaborate finish. It's the absence of compromise from the customer's point of view.


With LS LUXE, that means serious acoustic engineering, a complete active system, intuitive connectivity and a form people genuinely want to have in the room - not a black box they feel obliged to hide.


I would also separate "collectible" from "luxury". Something becomes collectible when it is scarce, speculative or treated as an artefact. LS LUXE is designed to be used - every day, for music, television and living with.


Its luxury is in the experience: Performance that feels effortless, technology that disappears into the product and design that continues to reward you after the initial novelty has passed.


KEF describes LS LUXE as something that can "shape your space". Do you think the role of the loudspeaker is changing from an object placed in a room to an object that helps define the room itself?


Nigel Ng: I don't think that's ever not been the case. For decades, the loudspeaker has defined the room. What has changed is the definition.


Loudspeakers used to be put exclusively in semi-dedicated listening rooms or living rooms for the family. These days they define dedicated hi-fi spaces, multifunction living rooms, computer workstations for music or gaming, background music applications and spaces beyond the house.


At the premium end, people increasingly want objects that contribute to the character of their home rather than compromise it.


LS LUXE is designed around that idea. Its form is deliberately sculptural and organic, but it is also a complete wireless system, giving people more freedom in how and where it is positioned.


Ultimately, the shift is from loudspeaker as "audio equipment" to loudspeaker as part of the interior architecture and day-to-day applications.


The ideal is not that visitors immediately see a system and ask what it costs. It's that the room feels more complete, and then they discover that it also sounds extraordinary.


The LS LUXE is designed for extraordinary technical performance, but music is rarely consumed in laboratory conditions. People cook, talk, move, entertain and live around it. Is KEF now designing as much for the life around listening as for listening itself?


Nigel Ng: Absolutely. KEF has designed LS LUXE and its other LS active products to be interacted with in the lowest-friction way possible.


LS LUXE is a complete system. You can stream directly from services such as Spotify or Tidal, connect via AirPlay 2 or Chromecast, connect a television via HDMI eARC, add a turntable, or simply use it for everyday entertainment without building a rack of separate components around it.


The key is that convenience cannot come at the cost of credibility.


We're not asking people to choose between a beautiful, intuitive product for daily life and a high-quality hi-fi system for the moments when they sit down and listen properly.


The ambition is to make one system that does both: Fill a room naturally at a dinner party, make television far more engaging and still reveal the depth and nuance of a recording when the room is quiet.


KEF has moved from the BBC-monitor tradition through LS50, MUON and LS60 to this highly integrated object. What has remained non-negotiable in KEF's idea of a great loudspeaker, and what has the company had to unlearn?


Nigel Ng: A steadfast approach to high-quality engineering and acoustics has remained non-negotiable.


The speaker should always, in acoustic terms, be invisible. This was one of the things you may have noticed during our launch night - you could hear the music coming from the corner, but not necessarily from two cabinets.


That thinking runs from KEF's BBC-era heritage through LS50, MUON, LS60 and now LS LUXE.


What KEF has had to unlearn is the idea that a serious loudspeaker must look conventional, be passive or require a complex hierarchy of separate boxes to be credible.


Those were valid solutions for their time, but they aren't immutable rules of high fidelity.

LS LUXE is the natural extension of that evolution. It doesn't abandon KEF's core acoustic disciplines; it applies them in a more integrated, design-led and liveable way.


The non-negotiable remains fidelity to the music.


What has changed is the belief that achieving it must involve visible complexity.


Six years of development ultimately produces a deceptively simple proposition: Two beautiful objects, a song and very little else. When you listen to LS LUXE at its best, what do you hope disappears first - the technology, the speaker or the room?


Nigel Ng: In our field, we come across incredible hi-fi systems. When they come into the showroom, we're naturally keen to hear what they sound like. We assess them for harmonic balance, soundstage, extension, dynamism, engagement and a whole bunch of other factors as we work out where they sit in our arsenal during our quest to - well - make as many people cry as we can.


The true test, though, is when we forget that we're supposed to be critically evaluating a system and simply start listening to the music.


After all, that's the whole point of buying a hi-fi system.


That's what LS LUXE presents: Serious engineering credibility, gorgeous design and a true, transparent presentation of music.
